10th November 2005

  • This morning’s whole school assembly on the theme of Peace was led by pupils in 4SK who encouraged us to consider peace makers and peace keepers, as well as the importance of compromise and reconciliation within our own daily lives.  These pupils have been studying and writing play scripts as part of their literacy curriculum, and their work in this area formed the basis for some super drama that was used to highlight thought provoking issues.

  • Earlier this week, we received a letter from Jo Barnes who spoke at a whole school assembly about the work of Barnardos.  Her talk obviously had an impact upon our pupils.  Jo’s letter confirmed that a grand total of £526.25 was raised by the boys and girls of St Peter’s School.  Children, what an incredible effort from you all.  Well done!

  • Maths Week takes place from Monday, and there are a host of activities planned that are designed to get our pupils thinking about number, measure, shape and data handling in new ways.  On Tuesday there will be a Maths Trail around the school grounds in which pupils from Key Stage Two team up with younger Key Stage One pupils.  On Wednesday children in Year One through to Year Six will be placed in groups to work with our visiting Town Planners on the organisation and construction of Lego settlements.  I know that so many of our pupils are looking forward to this event!  There will also be maths quizzes and daily challenges to keep our young mathematicians counting.

  • The Scholastic Book Fair has been in school this week.   If you have not yet had an opportunity to visit it then do please try to. Your purchases continue to earn Scholastic book commission vouchers for St Peter’s.  We have substantially developed our range of fiction and non fiction as a result.  The book fair will be open today and Monday after School, in the Infant Mobile.

  • On the theme of reading, there will be a meeting for parents of children in Reception class after School on Tuesday 15th November at which Mrs Bull will outline the procedures and principles used by her in the building up of reading skills.

  • On Friday Mr Kinsella and Miss Farrant accompanied a group of pupils from Years 4, 5 and 6 to the Independent Schools Association Regional Swimming Gala in Hinckley. There were a host of schools attending and St Peter’s pupils gave an excellent performance in so many of their races, with Rachel Kings qualifying for the Under 10 front crawl in the national finals in Coventry on 19th November.  She is also a reserve for the breast stroke and relay race, with Akshay Bilolikar also making the reserve list.  More news on the results will follow in the St Peter’s School magazine, which will be distributed towards the end of this term.

  • Last week’s match against Park brought another fabulous win to our St Peter’s netball team, and an even bigger smile to the faces of their coaches, Miss Farrant and Mrs Marshall. This means that they remain undefeated so far this term.  All of the commitment and effort shown in netball club this term is certainly paying off.

  • Next week St Peter’s will once again host the Kettering and District Small Schools’ 6 a-side football competition.  Teams representing Geddington, Loddington, Highfields and St Peter’s are involved.  Last year St Peter’s won the Eccles Shield for the third year running, so our visiting schools are very hungry for change!  Come and support our team after school on Thursday 17th November.  The matches start from 2.30pm.

  • Last night our footballers met St Thomas Moore in the Floodlit Football League.  They conceded three goals in the first half, but kept their defence firm in a very good second half, allowing no further goals for their opposition.  Next week’s match is at 4.40pm at Avondale, against Henry Gotch.  Good luck to our team.

  • The next ‘share your work’ session will take place on Monday 21st November.  A letter has been sent out to parents giving further details.  Please return reply slip promptly so that we can determine numbers and staffing for Late Club in advance.

  • Please return your photograph orders to school by the end of next week.  There is an option to place your order on the internet if you prefer.  We will be sending orders on Monday 21st November.

  • Following last week’s PTAFA meeting, arrangements have been made for this year’s Christmas Fayre which will take place on Saturday 3rd December.  Letters have been sent out to you asking for an indication of the ways in which you may be able to help this year.  I hope that you will be able to join us in what is always a well supported event.  It is also therefore one of the major fund raisers for the year, and is open not just to parents and pupils, but to your friends, neighbours and families, so do please advertise our Christmas Fayre to them.

  • The School will be invaded by a host of ghouls, monsters and vampires tomorrow evening, but we are relying on practically the entire pupil population of St Peter’s (ticket sales have been excellent!) to hunt these menaces down.  If you have not yet purchased your ticket for this year’s PTAFA Ghost Hunt, then there is still time to do so.  The fun starts at 6.30pm when we meet in Sunnylands Hall. I look forward to seeing many of you there, with glow sticks at the ready!
