12th May 2005 As we move into Summer and look forward to the prospect of sunny weather, we would like you to consider the following: - Wearing a sun hat helps your child to keep cool. The uniform shop currently has a good stock of School sun hats, including the Legionnaire style, which offers better protection for the back of the neck. The hats can be worn at playtimes, during PE and Games and other occasions when the children are outdoors during the School day. Please note that children should still come to School wearing their caps (boys) or straw boaters (girls).
- A long lasting high protection factor sunscreen should be initially applied at home each morning before School.
- Please teach your child to apply their own sunscreen, because teachers are unable to do this for them. You may find that sun spray or wipes are an easier method for younger children to use.
- A long lasting high protection factor sunscreen can also be brought to School and kept in class, but it has to be labelled with your child’s name. It can only be used by the pupil to whom it belongs.
- Teachers will provide an opportunity during the day for children to reapply sunscreen. We recommend that a very high protection factor is provided for School use.
- There will be a daily form for Nursery and Reception parents to sign should they wish their child to have sun cream applied by staff. The form will be situated in Early Club and outside the Nursery and Reception class areas. It is expected that the initial application of a long lasting high factor cream will still be made at home. Towards the end of an academic year, many Reception children are much more independent than at its start. If your Reception child is capable of applying his or her own cream then please inform the class teacher when supplying sunscreen for School. If your Nursery child is equally independent then please advise staff, who will monitor and encourage them to self-apply.
- Teachers will encourage your son or daughter to drink plenty of water during particularly hot days.
- Nursery and Reception class staff will have jugs of water in rooms and outside at break times.
- Year 1 and Year 2’s classrooms are very close to a drinking fountain, which can be used at break times too.
- Year 3 through to Year 6 should bring a bottle with an appropriate ‘sports’ top to school, and one that does not drip onto their school books! It is important that they fill up their bottles initially at home each morning so that water is fresh, and lesson time is not wasted on trips to the water-cooler to do this. If the bottle requires a refill during the course of the day then this is naturally acceptable. Please remind your children that they should take their drinking bottle home at the end of each day.
- We hope that by teachers and parents considering these matters in advance, our pupils will be appropriately ‘sun protected’, and free to safely enjoy what will hopefully be a very long, hot summer.
