10th March 2005

  • Tomorrow is Red Nose Day.  Children have been sent home with a ‘red nose’ to mark the School’s participation and contribution to this event.  Please note last week’s guidelines on how we intend to celebrate at School:  The Comic Relief ‘crazy hair’ and makeup that is also part of this year’s appeal is not suitable for our School day, as many pupils will be attending competitions at Kettering Eisteddfod, which is a very formal occasion.  Pupils need to come to School in regular uniform if they are taking part in an Eisteddfod competition that day, in tracksuits if they are not involved in the Eisteddfod that day, and all are welcome to wear a Hilarious Hat, but no wigs or make-up.  Red noses are most welcome!

  • Our girls won last week’s match against Park School, with a score of 7-2, although they were less fortunate when they met Meadowside earlier this week.  There will be no netball club next week on Wednesday 16th March due to an away match being played against Hall Meadow School.

  • This week has been packed with football events.  On Tuesday a team selected from Year 3 and Year 5 played a home match against Havelock School.  Both games were well contested, however our opponents defeated us convincingly.  I am pleased that our teams were intent on playing to win, but also showed a positive attitude when the result did not go in their favour.

  • Yesterday the St Peter’s team played in the semi-finals of the Floodlit Football League against Park School.  It was a gruelling game with St Peter’s taking the lead for its majority.  It was towards the end of the match that two goals were conceded to Park School, and one to St Peter’s was disallowed.  The disappointment that our lads feel has been tempered with the knowledge that
they travel to Sudbury to take part in the Independent Schools’ Association national finals.  They will be playing about seven or eight games in what will be a very demanding day for them.  We wish them success and look forward to some exciting match reports.

  • Parents are respectfully requested not to make u-turns using the side roads off The Crescent during the morning drop-off as this creates problems for other parent drivers queuing to drop off their children.  The drop-off on the whole has been running well. It would help the situation enormously if everyone drove to the end of The Crescent and then turned either left or right into Queensberry Road.  Hopefully this is not very much of an extension on journey time.  In addition, some local residents have recently complained of cars belonging to St Peter’s parents being parked across their driveways.  Please assist the School in maintaining sound relations with our ‘neighbours’.

  • Pupils are looking forward to next week’s Science Week.  Year 1 will be engaged in activities relating to sorting and classifying materials, whilst circuit puzzles will be the focus for Year 2. In Key Stage Two the week will begin with a paper ‘plane construction challenge which will be set as homework this weekend.  This activity will not only provide a focus for air resistance within the topic of Forces and Motion, but is also a fun way to engage children in scientific thinking.  The project will culminate in a ‘fly-off play-off’ on Tuesday to find the best design.  On Wednesday pupils in Year 3 through to Year 6 will take part in a round-robin of six experiments, exploring questions like ‘why is the sky blue?’ to looking at how cheese is made as a means of considering the changing states of solids, liquids and gases.  Our Science Week ends with the Electrifying Science Show, which is being presented firstly to pupils in Key Stage One and then to Key Stage Two.

  • You will have recently received a letter regarding the sale of summer bedding plants, the proceeds of which will go to the PTAFA.  Please note that the deadline for orders is shortly after our return to School following the Easter holiday: Friday 8th April.  The plants are priced very reasonably and are always of a good quality.  If you require another order form please drop in to the School Office to request one.

  • As if to reward everyone for their efforts in what has been a short but very busy term, the PTAFA cake stall will run next Friday, 18th March.  It is hoped that this advance notice will encourage the leafing through of recipe books and dusting down of baking trays, in an effort to provide cakes that will be sold in aid of Comic Relief!
